Final Fantasy IV: The After Years; It has Kain. What more do you need?

So, I've downloaded the WiiWare game FFIV:TAY a while back, and it's awesome.

Naturally, any true sequels to a Final Fantasy game are treated with suspicion (and with good reason), but this game is a nice throwback to the old SNES style; as someone who grew up in the SNES generation, this is a great tribute to it, much like MM9 to the NES Mega Man games. You should definitely play FFIV first, though.

I like the idea of playing individual stories; I'm looking forwards to playing Palom's story (Palom being my favourite non-Kain character in the original). The Challenge Dungeons add replayability and (gasp!) challenge, while the level cap on chapters keeps you from overpowering your characters. If they seem short, keep in mind that each story is only about a tenth of the total story.

And this game has Kain Highwind in it. Anything with Kain Highwind is awesome.

Having played FF4 just a couple of weeks ago, I'm pretty interested in this. I've read that it's just as hard or harder (since you can't powerlevel) compared to the original, and one of the things I liked about the game was its surprising difficulty.

Kain is indeed awesome.

Ah, you just played FFIV? Which version of it, the DS one or one of the older ones?

One of the things that makes it tough is that you often only have two characters (whereas in FFIV, the only times your party is that small in in the beginning parts), and you can't have a balanced team all the time like you normally would (for example, in the base game, you only have access to Black Magic at a few points in the story)

I played the GBA version, though I want to give the DS version a try.

What? You mean I can't spam Bio? D:

Oh, that's arguably the best version to play for this game. The graphical style is very similar to the non-DS versions of the game, right down to the menus. Plus, the GBA version is the only game that lets you switch party members; out of curiosity, who are your favourite FFIV chars?

And don't worry; in Rydia's Tale, Bio is the best spell she can learn with the Level Cap, so she can spam it all you want.

Rydia and Cecil are my two favorites. Edge would replace Cecil, but he dies way too easily.

Somehow, Rosa + Artemis Arrow + Aim = best attacker on my team. O_o Unfortunately, you get very few of those.

I also like Kain, mainly because he avoids so much damage with Jump.

Ah, of course. If Kain wasn't already good enough, he gets that... there's like 20 characters, and he's still one of the best.

Also, about the Arrow thing... yeah, that was annoying. Fortunately, in both this and in the DS version, you only need to get one arrow, so you don't have to buy multiples in those games.

The last set of side stories came out today; Porom's Tale, Edward's Tale, and The Lunarian's Tale. That just leaves the finale, which comes out in September.

Fortunately, Edward will have 3 Guards with him for most of the adventure. There is one time where Edward will have to go on his own, but by that time he'll be strong enough to beat most of the enemies by himself.

And Edward isn't actually that weak here. He deals more damage than one would expect once you get him better weapons, and Bardsong has useful effects (you can either use it on your team for things like Healing, Haste, and Shell + Protect, or on the enemy for status effects, which are actually quite good in The After Years). Also, he comes with an accessory that increases the amount of Gil earned in fights, and Harley, his main partner in his tale, comes with an accessory that doubles that effectiveness of healing items (you should switch the two around, since Edward's Salve ability works great with the healing item boost)

He's not going to be a powerhouse like Kain, or nuke everyone like Palom, but one should not underestimate the Spoony... Royal? (Seriously, why can't they just make his class name Bard?)

The final tale, The Crystals, is out today. Make sure you have good save files of the various tales if you want to get everything.
