i have an idea for a tournament what do you think about it?

Only characters from rpg games are aviable in this tournament (ness, lucass, ike, pokemons, etc.)
items off and every time a set of matchs end the damange radio it's rise .1 (because you lvl up :eyebrows: ).

it is only one idea but what do you think?

That raises the question of what the minimum requisite would be.

Mario is not strictly an RPG character but he's had at least six RPGs. Peach and Bowser were playable in two, Luigi in three. A Yoshi was playable in Paper Mario 2, and an entire island of Yoshis appeared as NPCs in SMRPG, Paper Mario, and M&L:PiT. Luigi was also an NPC in the first two Paper Mario games and it's been speculated the invisible NPCs in SMRPG were Luigi and Wario.

Sonic has an upcoming RPG, and Sonic Heroes had a sort of level up system. Sonic and the Secret Rings also had an experience system reminiscent of Kingdom Hearts.

Legend of Zelda lacks common RPG features but is still defined as an RPG series.

I could go on, but I'm less certain about the other series I'm thinking of...

mario series: enough rpgs to count(except for wario, was never playable)

zelda series:no

sonic: to be debated
And this is what I'm talking about.

Let's start with Sonic since you didn't definitively answer. What are the minimum criteria? How many RPGs are needed? Can planned future releases count? Is SatSR considered an RPG? I'd say yes, but is it?

Next, Legend of Zelda. What defines an RPG? Is it a game with R, a game with P, a game with G? A game with R, P, and G? A game with R, P, or G? A game with another combination? Legend of Zelda has some features associated with RPGs, but not others. Some sites, if I'm not mistaken, list it as an RPG, and although I would first classify it as Adventure/Puzzle, do they know something I don't? Are they just smarter than me? If it is an RPG, why is it one? If it isn't, why not?

Now for the Mario spinoffs. So Yoshi's an RPG character, but Wario isn't? Well, alright, Wario has no RPG roles, but does Yoshi really count? The one in PM:TTYD is a baby Yoshi, while the one in Brawl is an adult. Does that make them inherently different, or is it enough that they're both Yoshis? It's quite ambiguous. Do the numerous Yoshi NPCs in three RPGs count? If not, why not? They're characters in RPGs. And when have Ganondorf and Zelda ever been playable? Or Wolf, or even Captain Falcon? If they don't have to be playable to be Nintendo characters, why should they have to be playable for RPG roles to count?

Figuring all this out could take a while.

sonic:i say it has to be released by the tournament time to count, satsr wasn't that much rpg in my opinion

since yoshi is playable in a mario rpg and is a semi-important character he counts, regular yoshi was in the original paper mario if i recall correctly

zelda characters: zelda/sheik and ganon were never playable so no way but for link and toonlink we do a poll if zelda is rpg or adventure to determine if he counts as an rpg character

well the character are still needing a definition but i think it would go like this:

Mario - yes (mario rpg and mario and luigi)
Luigi - yes (mario and luigi)
Peach - yes (super mario rpg)
Bowser - yes (super mario rpg)
Donkey kong - no
Didy kong - no
Yoshi - not sure probability no (perhaps he was a player in paper 2 but he was paper yoshi)
Wario - no
Link - yes (those games where the first one being consider rpg and still have many rpg features)
Zelda/Sheik - no
Ganondorf - no
Toon link - yes
Samus/zero suit Samus - no
Pit - no
Ice Climbers - no
R.O.B. - no
Kirby - no
Meta knight - no
King Dedede - no
Pikmin & olimar - no
Fox - no
Falco - no
Wolf - no
Capitan falcon - no
Pikachu - yes
Pokemon trainer - yes
Lucario - yes
Jigglypuff - yes
Ike - yes
Marth - yes
Ness - yes
Lucas - yes
Mr. game & watch - no
Snake - no
Sonic - no (open for debate)

well it would be like that and the damange radio would begin in .6 or something like that and rise so they can begin weak and get stronger.

Stock: 2

and it (the tournament) still needs aproval.

I like the idea a lot. It's a grouping that's completely different from the ones we've been using. I'm all for it.

As for which characters make it... The only one that really seems debatable is the Zelda series. Personally, I'm in favor of allowing them.

What I'm wondering now is what prize(s), if any, to give out...

Maybe we could compile a list of games from each series represented (i.e. Mario & Luigi for the Mario characters, one of the GBA FEs, and so on) and let the winners choose one?

Well....The first I heard of the Zelda series, they were referred to as "platformers", a term that seems to have faded away nowadays. Now they're really called Action games with puzzle elements, which is exactly what platformers were before. I've never heard anyone refer to those games as RPGs.

i would allow the links, for prizes i say top 4, obviosly higher place=better prize, also ally shouldn't be allowed to join because he is winning every prize if there is one if we do this tourney, sonic i say no unless this starts by the time his rpg is released, and yoshi is yoshi no matter what so he should be allowed

I say no to Yoshi. It's not THE Yoshi that's playable, and NPC Yoshis aren't the same. The Links I'm not sure about.

Also, I'm not sure on the levelling up thing... personally, I think a better way to show RPG aspects is to involve an RPG party.

For example...

My party is Ness, PT, and Luigi.
BS's party is Ike, Link, and Peach.
Both of us must decide our parties before the first battle (we don't tell each other, we just have to choose beforehand). We can only use a character once (I.E. BS couldn't have Ike, Link, and Ike again)

Luigi fights Ike: Ike wins.
Luigi is defeated, so I can no longer use Luigi for the match. However, BS can still use Ike.
PT fights Peach: PT wins.
BS can no longer use Peach.
PT fights Ike: Ike wins.
PT is defeated and I am no longer allowed to use him.
Ness fights Ike: Ness wins.
BS can't use Ike anymore.
Ness fights Link: Link wins.
All my party members have been defeated; BS still has Link. Thus, BS wins the match.

This was an idea I've had for awhile, and if I ever joined the gym thing, this would've been my 'gimmick' (with my 'party' being each of the three PT Pokemon); I think it works for this.

I think we'll be doing this after Sonic Chronicles comes out so we can include Sonic. You know what they say, the more the merrier.

i say we do this now with sonic included but we do ratio thing or each person has a computer partner thats the same as the persons character and it starts at level one and for each round won it gains a level and for each round lost it loses a level(some rpgs take exp for losing) and those levels carry on through the tournament

i like the party idea.

about the links i think the should be in for the next reasons:

1) in every the legend of zelda game you can name him and thats a rol game element.

2) he begins weak but he becomes stronger trought the game and thats the basic of any rpg.

3) like in all rpg's talking to npc is an important element of the game.

and i am sure that those aren't all reasons that exist.

the first zelda game, (I think it's the first...technically it's Zelda 2, so maybe that's it, forgive me on the specifics) had an RPG feel. You killed enemies, gained experience, upgraded weapons.

I mean i played it a year or so ago and I BELIEVE that's how it worked.

If I'm wrong by all means someone correct me on this.

EDIT: I also believe Sonic BATTLE was somewhat of an RPG.

Actually, in the first LoZ game, it was more or less the same system as in Ocarina of Time, where you could get heart pieces and new items and weapons and stuff through shops and dungeons, but that was it. In the second game, Legend of Zelda: The Adventure of Link, you could still find items, but you had a set amount of hearts, you had 3 lives, and you gained experience which could be used to upgrade your damage, health, or magic. That one was an RPG for sure.

Marth and Ike shouldn't really be in this. Fire Emblem games are TBS (Turn-Based Strategy) games, not RPGs. Other than that, I agree with vandread's list of characters.

And SD: that is an awesome idea. If that's what we do, I already have a team in mind.

Sigh....

Level up + EXP DOES NOT AUTOMATICALLY MEAN AN RPG.

I played a space shooter game in an arcade once where you could level up your shots for extra damage, and you gained EXP to level up your shots by icons that filled a bar at the bottom of the screen. RPG? NO.

There are many games that take a character on a long journey, on which he must power himself up in order to fight the antagonist. Those are not RPGs, those are adventure games. That is what the Zelda games are. As quoted from Wikipedia:

"Gameplay elements strongly associated with this genre, such as statistical character development, have been widely adapted to other video game genres. For example, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, an action game, uses resource statistics (abbreviated as "stats") to define a wide range of attributes including stamina, weapon proficiency, driving, lung capacity, and muscle tone, and uses numerous cutscenes and quests to advance the story."'

And Fire Emblem is not strictly strategy, it is a Strategy RPG.

The trouble is, we still haven't defined what does constitute an RPG.

You people seriously need to relax your definition of RPG. The purpose of this discussion shouldn't be classifying Zelda as an RPG or whatever, it should be finding a way to let more characters into this tournament in order to have more variety. If we go by games that are strictly RPGs, we'll be limited to these characters:

Ike
Marth
Lucas
Ness
PT
Lucario
Pikachu
Jigglypuff

Whereas if we let in games that are more questionable, we'll have

Ike
Marth
Lucas
Ness
PT
Lucario
Pikachu
Jigglypuff
Mario
Bowser
Peach
Link
Zelda
Ganondorf
Toon Link
Sonic

This doubles the roster of playable characters and accommodates more people.

Vyse has a good point. Especially if we use the party system; we want people to be able to use characters they're decent/good with, and the first set limits it to only a few people who could do it (incidentally, one of which is me)
