I've heard there are some people who will only watch subbed anime. And to those people I have this to say. Every day, hundreds of licensors and fandubbers put their lives on the line to bring you quality anime in English. And you're going to spit in their faces by watching the subbed versions instead? What are you, some kind of Communist? Note: No offense intended to any actual Communists. I'm merely using a common American phobia to attempt to shame the American fansub audience. Although I suppose it was painfully obvious that this was my intention, so this note really isn't all that necessary. I guess I should just end it now. Yep. That's what I'll do. Riiiiight... now. In conclusion, go support the proud men and women defending the English language by watching some English dubs right now. Dubbed anime. It's the American way. |

Technically, America sucks due to not being creative enough to support their own cartoons and make more of them. As such, they take anime and ruin the original feel by giving it said "American way." Seeing as I watch anime to watch a Japanese cartoon, I'd like it in Japanese, thank you very much. And if they put their lives on the line to bring me quality English anime, they better try damned harder, because right now their lives aren't looking too good. America besmirches the name of famous anime in Japan. For example, let's look at Initial D: one of the most well respected shows overseas. The two main characters, Takumi and Itsuki, had their names changed to Tak and Iggy. Where's the justice in that? If America wants to be so "quality," why can't they at least do it right? You don't see Japanese people calling Americans named Ian "Itsuki" just because it "sounds right." |

I don't care. For one thing, lots of anime(Naruto, One Piece etc) are a lot further along in Japan, and I can watch a lot further. Some anime that air here have already finished in Japan, and id rather watch it all at once than wait for it to finish here. Plus I hate waiting for it to come on TV/dvds to release. Some dubs just suck(4kids one piece), and after listening to the Japanese voices so much im used to hearing it in Japanese and now english can sound awkward. That being said, I plan to buy the Gurren-Lagann DVDs when they come out.... So I can watch them in Japanese ...lol tl;dr:I dont feel like waiting for the series to finish up here and would rather watch it whenever i want/get farther in an unfinished series and prefer/am more used to japanese voices |

Er. 1. America doesn't make cartoons? Then what's this "Family Guy" show that I watch all the time? America doesn't make anime because it's a primarily Japanese style, but that has absolutely nothing to do with what you said at all. (Actually, even that is somewhat inaccurate; due to the overwhelming popularity American cartoonists have begun attempting to emulate the style of anime, with varied results.) 2. Seeing as I speak English, I like to hear English audio, thank you very much. 3. The name change problem you describe is not something that occurs with all anime, and as such, it is not a point against dubs, but against specific licensors or series. ...eh, sorry for getting so serious about this all of a sudden, but as much as I intended this topic for a laugh, I really can't stand Japanese purists. That's not to say I only watch dubbed anime, I rather enjoy some subs, but to claim that dubs are inferior because they're dubbed... that just irks me. |

I don't mind either dubbed or subbed. Unless it's done by 4kids. ogawd. Basically, I don't mind unless it gets cut or censored or something like that. |

this. It's when they start changing the names and watering down significantly, then it's like 'oh HELL no'. But I do prefer hearing English. ...unless the voice acting sounds waaaaay older than it should (I'm looking at you, Mello! O_O ) |

I like to watch series that haven't been liscensed yet or dubbed yet in Japanese. But if there's a dub available, I'll watch it. Most of the series I watch aren't liscensed yet when I start watching them but they do get liscensed after I watch it, so I re-watch it in English. Like with Haruhi Suzumiya or Ichigo Mashimaro or Death Note. But there are some series I watch straight dubbed. Like FLCL, Yu Yu Hakusho, Steel Angel Kurumi, etc. Also, a point with Detective Conan (Or the English version is Case Closed). The dubbed of this anime is only 88 episodes long, and doesn't even conclude the plot. It just leaves me hanging. I watched the first 88 episodes in English, then switched to the subbed so I can be satisfied with knowing whether or not Conan gets his body back. This series is over 500 episodes long and is still continuing, but the dubbed has stopped permanently at 88. I'm going to watch the rest of the series subbed, thank you very much. I want to know what happens to Conan! (Besides, you don't get actual good information on the plot until the 100s or so. That's also when Ai comes in. She's in the same situation as Conan, but comes from the organization that did that to Conan.) |
